Being Fruitful is Good

The North - Utara

In the beginning,
North is beautifully irreplaceable
North shines as a direction
North gives many lessons
North is where I want to be

I go to the North
Expanding my horizons
Seeing the world without borders
Adding notes to my almost-full journal

But suddenly,
North swallows her figure that warms the world
North makes her uncontrollable
As if it poisons her mind
the North that I always avoid

I go to the North
But it is not the same North anymore
The coast I know is no more
The roar of the sea I hear no more

Then,
North, this time it is not the far one
North, that unfamiliar is
North, that full of differences but has little in common
but this time it is reassuring

You go to the South
Towards the dark sky with such gentle sun
Towards the cold air in the pine forest
Walking defiantly, meeting the unfamiliar South

In the end,
North, again, expands my horizons
North gives a lot of surprises
North shows the good and bad
North: a berth and a tether
which is so complicated; makes the attachment even stronger

We go to the North
Towards the fish market
Towards the rotting ships
Sinking in a submarine
Drowning in love

His love can never be interpreted
Intoxicating His guardless creature
Evokes sad and anger
Evokes happiness and enlightenment
Without involving dairy cows
Together we were flushed

We go to the North
To face happiness and hard times
To confront the differences that barred me
That alienates me from those who are foreign to me

Despite everything, still
I go to the North
Because the North is our dream
The one to be achieved
And to be kept even though it's painful

Awalnya,
Utara memang indah tak tergantikan
Utara bersinar sebagai penunjuk arah
Utara memberi banyak pelajaran
Utara, tempat di mana aku ingin berada

Pergilah aku ke utara
Melebarkan cakrawalaku
Melihat dunia tanpa batas
Menambah goresan di buku catatan
yang terisi semakin penuh

Lalu,
Utara menelan sosoknya
yang lama menghangatkan duniaku
Utara membuatnya kehilangan kendali
Utara meracuni pikiran-pikirannya
Utara, sejak itu lama kuhindari

Pergilah aku ke utara
Bukan lagi utara yang sama
Tidak ada lagi pesisir
Tidak ada lagi deru ombak

Kemudian,
Utara yang kali ini tak jauh bertiup:
Utara yang asing
Utara yang penuh perbedaan, dengan sedikit kesamaan
Utara kali ini
kembali menenangkan hati

Pergilah kau ke selatan
Menuju gelapnya langit dengan matahari yang lembut
Menuju dinginnya hutan pinus
Berjalan menantang diri, bertemu selatan yang asing

Akhirnya,
Utara kembali memperluas cakrawalaku
Utara memberi banyak kejutan
Utara menunjukan baik dan buruknya semesta
Utara, tempat berlabuh dan bertambat,
dengan jalinan yang rumit,
yang membuat ikatannya kuat

Pergilah kita ke utara
Menuju pasar-pasar ikan
Menuju kapal-kapal lapuk
Tenggelam bersama kapal-kapal selam
Tenggelam dalam cita

Amor darinya tak tertafsirkan
Memabukkan insan-insan yang lengah
Berujung kesedihan, kemarahan
Tetapi juga: kebahagiaan, pencerahan
Tanpa melibatkan sapi perah
Bersama kami memerah

Pergilah aku ke utara
Untuk menghadapi senang dan susah
Membentur tembok-tembok perbedaan
Mengasingkanku dari mereka: sang asing

Meski begitu nyatanya, tetap
Pergilah aku ke utara
Karena utara adalah mimpi kita
Yang mesti diraih
Dan dijaga meski perih

In extreme situations...
How does the will to survive manifest itself?
The persistent will to fight one's limit?
The unwavering belief that God doesn't present insurmountable trials?
The conviction from love for your friends and family?

For me...
None of them.
Up until today,
my will to survive is
Realism.

I know this world is not something that can be controlled.
Death, like the roll of a die,
is just a providence that may befall anyone at any moment.
In front of an impregnable wave, humans are absolutely powerless.
Lessons from my time among nature:
Reality should be taken in instinctively at every moment.
Constantly and calmly accessing, steadily adapting.
By following these guidelines,
I have been able to survive in the world.

Solitude

On the mountain
there is no illusions.
On the mountain
the things you see,
the things you touch,
all things you feel,
are things I take in,
just as they are.
The mountain is the only place
that monster can't reach.
I would never lie to the mountain.

The world I lived in
was entrapped
by a giant invisible monster.
The one who stick out
are rejected.
It's unforgivable.
In the world I lived in,
the giant invisible monster
took from me the only one
who accepted who I was.

An irreplaceable thing...
The most important thing...
Hope...
Despite losing it all...
I am still struggling with
the need to continue
moving forward
But...
Still...
After all...
It's a sad thing to be alone.

Buldak

It was a typical cold night. Hardi and Mike are busy with their group project. Lucky me, I got an invitation from them to eat something at Mike’s apartment. Maybe this is kind of gratitude since I was trying to help them with their project. But I feel that I’m the one who learns a lot from them, and I just screwed their work (:P). Nico opened the door and asked if I bring the camera. So this is going to be some eating challenge. Well, you can find one like this on Youtube, if you have time.

To eat Buldak was the challenge. Buldak is a dish from South Korea, I guess. Bul means fire and Dak is chicken. So we can say Buldak is fire chicken. Just like the name, this food supposed to be heavily spicy. I heard that Korean in some era started to seek spicy food, they believe spicy food can relieve the stress. Our situation was quite right to eat hot dish, we were tired, and in most town, it was spring already, but we still have snow that time.

To be honest, I was scared to eat this hot chick. I’m too young to die LOL. The dish was cooked using about 100 chilies. We also have more chilies as garnish. Come on, dude. Fresh chilies as a garnish was a really really fantastic idea. Okay, I shoved rice and the chicken. I ate the first, chewed. Came the second, the third and so on until I commented that this taste good and the spicy wasn’t evil enough compare to Samyang that made me cry even from the first bite. Samyang is a brand of Korean instant noodles and very popular because of spicy flavor.

I ate maybe a half of my plate. Suddenly I imagined that this Buldak cooked using blazing hellfire, the chicken was dancing on fire and contaminated by the tormenting flame. This crazy hot chick tortured my mouth, my tongue. Made me crawled like a worm under the direct sun. We don’t have milk to save us, and we ended up drinking Cola or whatever. And it did help for a while, but the hurt won’t go. In this crazy situation, we found that wafer and biscuit can help. Even it was only a 1€-Waffer.

Too bad, this challenge ended up prematurely. From 2 big pyrex, we left half of the pyrex. We were out of rice and wafer, so our champion Jek can’t finish the rest. Jek is the only one who can enjoy the food and said that the food is excellent. The rest of it was more tteok than chicken. Tteok is rice cake. We avoided them because the hot one can make everything worst. Anyway, it is better to stop, unless you want to boot-camp your ass. Eat this kind of food for a week; I can guarantee you that your anus won’t get hot when you defecate.

So here is our reference Buldak, Junchef’s Style. From this version, we just multiply them about three times. But we use whole 100 chilies and still adding Gochujang and chili powder.

Ingredients:
3.5 tbsp Gochujang
3 cloves garlic (minced)
10 red chilies (sliced)
16 green chilies (pierced)
3.5 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp chili powder (optional)
1 tbsp soy sauce
Scallion
Tteok

Seasoning:
1.    Put Gochujang and Scallion together in container
2.    Then garlic and chilies
3.    Come sugar and chili powder
4.    Add 2 tbsp water and soy sauce
5.    Stir

Cook the chicken:
1.    Wait for the frying pan until hot enough, add chili oil.
2.    Put chicken first till half cooked
3.    Add the seasoning
4.    Give 5-7 tbsp water, to avoid burn
5.    Add some tteok and scallion

Done!

Angklung Naq Maknya

This bamboo music instrument is one of my favorite. Back there at Bandung, when I have nothing to do and the timing is right, I went to Saung Angklung Udjo to enjoy Angklung performances there. In this Udjo’s House of Angklung people, usually, tourists can also try to play the Instrument. Depends on the song selection, the conductor way of conducting, and the team even a non-musician can play an arrangement.

I did once play the instrument for a song there. But here in Clausthal, I somehow established an angklung orchestra, compose some cover songs and teach the group. We are a bunch of amateurs, yeay. The odds is we don’t own the instruments. So we can only train about 2-3 weeks before the show and after we borrow them from the nearest General Consulate. Just after our second play, thanks to the group from Indonesia who left their instrument in someone’s basement so that they can bring more souvenir from Germany, we now own the instruments although they aren’t a complete set.

I arbitrarily named the group Angklung Naq Maknya, the Mother’s Child. Why? Because compared to others, we are still a newborn and we need protection and affection from our mother. I’m overexcited to have the group grown in this super small town. We have more member now than our first show, and some of them also want to compose. Hope this newborn can survive the world till the end of time. Okay, here is our list so far. They are recorded live at Indonesia Night Clausthal 2016. So the sounds maybe isn't great. Enjoy.
